Formulary review to incorporate NICE recommendations

Guidance out by end of year

By Ailsa Colquhoun

22nd of August 2012

NHS prescribing leads have been told to review local formulary processes to begin implementation of the Innovation Health and Wealth (IHW) strategy, first launched in December 2011.

In a letter, DH chief pharmaceutical officer Dr Keith Ridge has said that from April 1, 2013, local formularies must include all NICE technology appraisal recommendations.

Guidance published by NICE before the end of the year will advise how technologies can be incorporated into local formularies. The aim will be to achieve a planned implementation that supports safe and appropriate clinical practice.

Guidance will also document:

  • How to incorporate local clinical and patient needs
  • how best to reduce inappropriate variation
  • how best to optimise medicines use
  • whether there is scope to reduce any administrative burdens of formulary maintenance.
