Pharmacy in Healthcare Centres

Lloyds want to increase presence

Dr Allan Tennant reports

30th of November 2009

Lloyds pharmacy have sold their health centre business to Ashley House and thus acquired a stake in the latter company. This will give Lloyds pharmacy increased access to developing pharmacies in health centres.

Boots as we know have developed GP services within pharmacies.

Regular readers of DDA Online, will be aware of my personal view that GPs in both urban and rural locations should be considering opening pharmacies.

The reasons for this belief is that:

  • The combined model works for patients.
  • The one stop shop concept.
  • If pharmaceutical services are developed at the expense of medical services, the combined approach protects patient services in GP surgeries.
  • In many areas of the UK areas which previously would have been non viable for pharmacy development or merely marginal, may now support a pharmacy and it is better for that pharmacy to be located in your surgery than elsewhere. So that income from dispensing can continue to support rural medical services.
