Transparency in outcomes

First of many consultations

Dr Allan Tennant reports

23rd of July 2010

Hot on the heals of the Health White Paper comes a consultation on a framework on establishing accountability at a national level in an open and transparent way and how the success of the NHS

should be judged.

This is your opportunity to have a say on how we will be performance managed, whether its targets or measured outcomes. Although the document does say its not about performance management, rather it will act as a catalyst for driving quality across all services.

Never the less it is important that people respond. There is no mention of dispensing in the consultation document. The only mention of medicines is with respect to hospital discharge.

This is the first of a stream of consultations.

The consultation document explains and asks for views on:

  • the principles that should underpin the NHS Outcomes Framework;

  • a proposed structure and approach that could be used to develop the framework;

  • the potential outcome indicators  (existing and future) that could be presented in the framework, including the proposed rationales for selection;

  • how the proposed NHS Outcomes Framework can support equality across all groups and can help reduce health inequalities; and

  • how the framework can support the necessary partnership working between public health and social care services needed to deliver the best possible outcomes for patients

The consultation closes on 11 October 2010.
