From March 2022, the Drug Tariff for England and Wales will include a new section, Part VIIID, which sets out payment arrangements for specials and imported unlicensed medicines (mainly tablets and capsules) to be paid relative to commonly identified pack sizes.

This new section of the Drug Tariff currently comprises 47 specials. For the full listing, see Section 4.1.2 of the Drug Tariff preface for February.

Part VIIID specials will be reimbursed a fixed price relative to a commonly identified pack size. This will help the NHS reduce its overall spend on specials.

PSNC has produced a briefing paper Part VIIID – Specials with reimbursement prices relative to commonly identified pack sizes explaining the new Part VIIID. Dispensing GPs should note that the specials endorsement XP20 applies in dispensing practice.
