The annual increase in the number of prescription items dispensed in the community in England was 2.58% in 2021-22, up by 28.7 million items to 1.14 billion items. The cost of prescription items was £9.69 billion, an increase of £83.7 million or 0.87%, from £9.61 billion in 2020-21.
The annual Prescription Cost Analysis (PCA) from the NHS Business Services Authority also shows that:
- the average cost per item was £8.50;
- atorvastatin was the most dispensed drug in 2021-22 with 53.4 million items;
- apixaban was the drug with the highest cost of £401 million;
- the FreeStyle Libre 2 Sensor kit was the presentation with the largest absolute increase in cost rising £69.8 million from £2.84 million in 2020-21 to £72.6 million in 2021-22.
