BBC highlights rural GP recruitment issues

Difficulties recruiting GPs to rural areas have been highlighted by the BBC.

Rural GPs Dr Malcolm Ward and Dr Peter Holden told the reporter that rural practices are “one retirement from collapse”.

“Rural practices are smaller and have less resilience,” Matlock GP Dr Holden said, adding: “It is not just a case of merging or federating… sometimes geography prevents this.

One suggestion to mitigate the recruitment crisis is to encourage trainee placements in rural practice, said Dr Ward.
