The Government has pledged to host a public consultation on a replacement falsified medicines detection system within a year of enabling legislation becoming law.
The supporting Bill, the Medicines and Medical Devices Bill received its Second Reading in the Lords on 2 September 2020.
Although the UK has a low prevalence of falsified medicines, the Bill seeks to continue to protect patients from falsified medicinal products.
The legislation enables the UK to put in place a bespoke falsified medicines system, following the UK’s departure from the European Union, whose database supported Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD) verification systems.
