For people of a certain generation, the word AIDS immediately conjures up the 1980s campaign that featured images of tombstones and the tagline “Don’t die of ignorance”. But huge progress has been made and nowadays HIV is regarded as a lifelong but eminently manageable condition, in much the same way as diabetes and hypertension.

New training on HIV/AIDS, available free and exclusively to DDA members, is designed to provide practice dispensary staff with background information to help you help your patients better manage their condition. Throughout this training, you will find various activities to help reinforce your learning. Ten, multiple choice questions at the end will help you identify any areas needing a quick recap.

By the end of this article, you will:

  • know what HIV and AIDS are
  • understand how HIV is contracted and diagnosed
  • be aware of how HIV is managed and the aims of treatment
  • appreciate some of the measures patients with HIV can take themselves that can make a difference to their condition.

DDA members can access the training in our Clinical Zone.
