DDA member practices in Wales have been inspected by Healthcare Inspectorate Wales.

The Bodowen surgery in Holywell was found to have suitable arrangements in place to ensure the safe prescribing and dispensing of medicines, although the practice was recommended to improve the security of the dispensary, for example, by locking the door. The practice was also said to have processed in place to  learn from any patient safety incidents.

Several improvements have been identified for the Hywel Dda University board-run practice the Minafon Surgery in Kidwelly.

The health board was told to introduce systems to manage expiry dates for stored medication. It was also told to ensure that temperatures of rooms that store medicines are monitored regularly and protocols to be enacted if temperatures exceed 25°C.

However, fridges storing medication were well maintained and documented daily and recordings of the temperature were available for inspection.

At the time of the inspection, the health board was trying to recruit several GPs and practice nurses.
