The consequences of dispensing at a loss have been raised in the Welsh Parliament.
In a debate about community pharmacies, South Wales Welsh Conservative Joel James MS said dispensing at a loss could result in a loss of services, and pharmacies closing. “It reduces the money available for pharmacies to reinvest in services, to pay their staff better wages, and it also creates a possibility that pharmacies may not be able to afford to dispense these drugs.”
He added that rising energy costs, plus costs associated with COVID had particularly affected smaller independent practices.
In response, Minister for Health and Social Services Eluned Morgan said that funding for prescribing services and independent services in community pharmacies will increase from £1.2 million to £4.2 million from April.
