FreeStyle Libre Sensors will be added to Part II of the Drug Tariff, ‘Drugs for which discount is not deducted’, with effect from July 1st, PSNC has announced.

Dispensing practices will not be affected by this, but the discount change will apply to those with pharmacy contracts.

The move follows negotiations with the Department of Health and Social Care, with PSNC having the support of manufacturer Abbott Ltd.

The request was made as the sensors can only be ordered directly from the manufacturer. Demand increased significantly following extra NHS funding being made available in April specifically for prescribing the device.

Contractors had been reporting that they were dispensing each pack at a loss because no discount was available although the item was subject to the standard discount deduction scale.

The Drug Tariff notes for DND items that: “Contractors who have not received discount in respect of [listed] products need not endorse the prescription. The prescription price reimbursement will have no discount deduction applied.”
