NHS Business Services Authority has launched a public dashboard with practice level information on inhaler prescribing.
The aim of the dashboard, dubbed Catalyst, is to help prescribers and patients to make more environmentally-friendly inhaler choices.
Estimates suggest that around 3 per cent of total NHS carbon emissions can be attributed to the prescribing of respiratory inhalers, primarily metered-dose inhalers (MDI).
Prescribing of lower-carbon inhalers (dry powder inhalers (DPI) or soft-mist inhalers (SMI), or lower-CO2 MDI variants, is now recognised as a more sustainable approach to respiratory prescribing.
Prescriber data is also available from the Respiratory – Carbon Impact Dashboard
There is also a NICE decision aid to sustainable inhaler choices.
