Pharmacy technician training will change from 2019 to allow supervision of the practical training element by a pharmacy technician.

New regulations expected to be published next year by the pharmacy regulator, the General Pharmaceutical Council, allow trainee pharmacy technicians to achieve the practical work-based training element of the technician qualification under the supervision of a qualified pharmacy technician as well as a pharmacist.

Candidates must complete a minimum of two years relevant work-based experience in the UK and be directly accountable to an eligible supervisor for at least 14 hours per week.

Training providers are expected to design courses incorporating the new standards during 2018-2019, and offer courses based on the new standards from 2019.
