Uncollected meds follow-up earns DDA member an outstanding rating

DDA member the Haxby Group Practice in York has received an outstanding rating in the areas of effectiveness, caring and the quality of its leadership.

Contributing to the outstanding rating for caring, the dispensary was commended for its follow-up of vulnerable patients who failed to collect their medicines within two weeks.

Inspectors also applauded the dispensing for its robust analysis, and response to, themes and trends of errors that were identified in the dispensary.  The Group was also commended on its arrangements to identify and review the treatment of newly pregnant women on long-term medicines.

Outstanding caring and responsiveness has also earned an outstanding rating overall for the dispensing practice, Great Witley Surgery, in Worcester. Inspectors noted proactive response by a dispenser who was asked to supply painkillers after a fall. The dispenser requested that the patient be seen by the duty doctor for further examination. This resulted in a change to their medicines

Due to the rurality of its patients the practice also holds monthly psychogeriatrician clinics on a monthly basis. The on-site dispensary allowed medicines prescribed by the surgery to be dispensed promptly.  The dispensary team were also able to hold daily huddles to discuss any clinical issues or concerns.

Inspectors, however, have recommended additional security for the dispensary and for the controlled drugs cupboard.
