The DDA and BMA are advising GPs to wait for negotiations to conclude before buying dispensary software for the Falsified Medicines Directive and the Electronic Prescription Service.

The advice follows the launch of PSUK’s dispensary Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) system. This is suitable only for single dispensaries using the EMIS Web/EMIS ProScript Connect systems.

The DDA and BMA position is that all GP IT should be funded by NHS England. The BMA has placed this into the negotiations for the 2019 settlement and the DDA advises that practices should await the outcome of the negotiations before purchasing.

  • An FMD toolkit has been published to help dispensaries plan for FMD implementation, the above advice notwithstanding. The toolkit also provides useful links to other sources of relevant FMD information.
