Prescription volumes in Wales have topped 80 million, new statistics from NHS Wales show.

Following a 1 per cent increase compared to 2015, in 2015 Welsh prescribers ordered 80.3 million items.

This equates to almost 26 items a head, the highest amount in Great Britain, and  compares to 21.9 in Northern Ireland, 20.2 in England and 19.1 in Scotland.

The net ingredient cost of all prescriptions dispensed in the community has decreased by 2.7 per cent since 2015, to £578.0 million in 2016.  Medicines for the treatment of the cardiovascular system make up the largest group in terms of prescription items (23.5 million), but drugs for the treatment of the central nervous system make up the largest group in terms of cost (£121.6 million).
