Kevin Hollinrake MP has welcomed a chance to visit to DDA member practice Millfield Surgery.
The reelected MP for Thirsk and Malton, who has an interest in local communities and the environment and who works closely with environment secretary Michael Gove, said that it was incredibly important that local families could get the quality of care they needed as close to home as possible.
Mr Hollinrake visited the Easingwold dispensing practice after being sent the DDA’s general election briefing paper, and he spent around 30 minutes in the dispensary before visiting the rest of the practice.
Dispensary manager Helena Tilley said his visit was a very useful opportunity to drill down into the details of loss-making reimbursement in GP dispensing. “At the start of the visit, he was unfamiliar with the drug tariff, but by the end we were discussing the clawback, the number of drugs with no discount, the differences between pharmacy and dispensing GP reimbursement and [the April] dispensing fee reduction.”
During the visit Ms Tilley was also able to explain the vital role of GP dispensaries in the medicines supply chain, and how patients who are ineligible for GP dispensing services are inconvenienced when rural pharmacies experience supply problems. “Patients faced with a 20-mile round trip because their usual pharmacy is out of stock cannot understand why we can’t supply them instead.”
She said the MP went away with a much greater understanding of the financial and other pressures facing dispensing GPs and the impact on dispensary losses on overall practice service development.
She said: “I hope he is now more likely to stand up in parliament for the ‘little guy’.
