The BMA has highlighted the business pressures facing GPs of the eNIC (employer National Insurance Contributions) and National and Minimum Living Wage rises in its budget representation. Estimates by the BMA suggest that the new employment costs, effective from 1 April 2025, will cost practices in England at least £187 million in 2025/26.
Across the UK, costs could be as high as £550m, the medical trade union estimates, concluding: “Recent funding increases are barely able to cover existing spending pressures.”
In its submission, the BMA contends that the NHS cannot be expected to meaningfully increase productivity while being starved of investment.
It calls for pay scales to be consistently increased above RPI inflation to encourage recruitment and retention.
