Phased GP implementation of Mounjaro starts today

GPs have been given the green light to prescribe tirzepatide (Mounjaro)  from today (June 23) in a phased implementation period.

Eligible cohorts for NHS dispensing are adults:

  • with an initial body mass index (BMI) of at least 35 kg/m2, and
  • at least one weight-related comorbidity.

The novel dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist is also recommended alongside a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Since 24 March 2025 tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) has been available on the NHS via specialist weight management services.

Obesity is a growing public health concern in England, with 29 per cent of adults living with obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m²), and 64 per cent living with overweight or obesity.

General training for dispensers supporting obesity is available from the DDA and will be updated to reflect the new guidance shortly.

The phased implementation period aims to reflect available capacity in primary care and will be used to scale a variety of implementation service models in primary care, including non-GP primary care services. Obesity experts have warned of the pressure prescribing for weight loss will place on the NHS.
