DDA addresses Welsh EPS shortfalls

The DDA and GPC Wales are working collaboratively to address shortfalls in the functionality of the Welsh EPS.

In an update, NHS Wales states that it has found a technical solution for dispensing GPs  that will allow dispensing practices to utilise EPS for both their dispensing and non-dispensing patients.

However, this solution does not allow amendments to the body of the electronic prescriptions, for example, to negate financial losses.

In the April GP E-Bulletin, NHS Wales Primary Care Electronic Prescription Service Programme admits that it has not been possible to find a technical solution that allows all operations within the dispensary to continue in the status quo. It says: “Use of the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) by dispensing doctors in Wales will bring benefits to their patients and other clinicians, as well as improving prescribing safety, but was always likely to require both GP surgeries and dispensers to make changes to their current processes.”

The DDA and GPC Wales aim to identify additional resources to support an approach to Welsh Government in relation to this problem.
