DHSC opens consultation on statutory branded medicines pricing scheme

A consultation is now open to consider updates to the statutory Branded Health Service Medicines (Costs) Regulations 2018 (the regulations) from 2024.

Views are being sought on three specific areas within the statutory branded medicines pricing scheme:

increase the allowed growth rate which will have the effect of changing the payment percentages
revise which sales of branded medicines are exempt from scheme payments
a controls on spending on older branded medicines (the ‘lifecycle adjustment’)

The consultation, which closes on 10 October, will also consider whether the branded scheme can operate as a standalone scheme or alongside a successor to the 2019 voluntary scheme for branded medicines pricing and access (VPAS), which is also due to renew from 2024.
