Legislation to enable hub and spoke dispensing will be laid in the coming weeks to come into force later this year, health minister Stephen Kinnock has said.
The chosen model for hub and spoke is the spoke-hub-spoke model where the dispensary supplies the medicine to patient. This revisits the introduction of hub and spoke, which was postponed from January 1, 2025.
The other now rejected model proposed spoke-hub-patient, where the hub supplies directly to the patient. This model was felt to possibly undermine the provision of a full dispensing service in rural areas and the market entry arrangements.
During the question-and-answer session, Kinnock pledged his committed to the Pharmacy First service and said that the outcome of community pharmacy contract negotiations would be announced “very shortly”.
